comment here refers to a plugin which was released before WordPress 3.0
(IIRC), and to date, has had a total of 442 downloads.

I'm aware of the plugin solution but I would not class this as 'easily
accessible'. The end user would need to be aware that the solution was
already there as a plugin or chance a plugin search to find it.

A core option to turn it off should be as straight forward as the 3 line
plugin and would pacify the WordPress 3.0 users who have seen their sites
rendered full of broken links by this code addition.

I'm trying to offer pragmatic solutions to something that, while maybe not
a problem to the core devs who know how to work around this problem, may
well be a big issue for users who just like to install and use and would
have little idea about finding if this issue affects their site, much less
 know how to fix it.

Think of your end users and make their life easier rather than alienating
 them.
