 + 1 for making this a setting that users can disable if they choose (like
 convert emoticons). It would fit conveniently under Writing -> Formatting.

 Reverting would be preferred, but that doesn't seem very likely at this
 point. Giving users a way to disable the formatting will at least make it
 much less intrusive. I think what upsets people is the formatting of
 content without asking permission or giving regular users (who may not
 even know about it) the freedom to quickly and easily turn it off without
 installing a plugin or editing code.
