 I just ran over this ticket and skimmed throught your discussion here and
 I thought I throw in my inspiration in form of a second patch:

 Instead of handling multiple input types, in this patch I normalize the
 input first, so it's more easy to deal with afterwards.

 As you can see, the code size is reduced and it's less complex.
