 Perhaps a possible alternate approach would be to provide a load priority
 option for plugins, in the same way that you can define a priority on
 add_action and add_filter calls?

 That way I could set BuddyPress as a higher priority than the default,
 which would ensure that it is loaded before any dependent plugins.
