 That idea as expounded by Jeremy says to me that it is important to use
 some completely different term, and "post" will be one type of it, "page"
 another, and so forth.

 Having ready through all of the above, I think the best suggestion
 (surprisingly unnoted) is "record".  It's comprehensible, pretty generic,
 and best of all, not yet generally used in the WordPress universe.
