 @aaroncampbell - Not sure if you are addressing persistence or not but how
 does a plugin provide those checkboxes to endusers with a standard way to
 persist said options, at least in a manner compatible with other plugins?
 IOW it seems that we need metadata for post types and a standard way to
 store that meta data.  Inclusion of metaboxes actually seems like a
 special case of metadata which we should standardize?
