Comment(by husobj):

 Just wondering if it would be useful to incorporate the concept of my
 plugin into core:

 http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/list-pages-at-depth/

 It is basically the wp_list_pages function but with an additional argument
 for start depth.

 This means that you can easily create a secondary navigation menu that is
 separate from your primary navigation menu. Just pass a startdepth
 parameter of 1 and it will display secondary level for the current
 context, wether you're in a primary, secondary or tertiary level. If there
 is no secondary level, it just won't show.

 Really useful for putting together themes if you want primary navigation
 along the top, and secondary navigation elsewhere.
