 I didn't try any other patches besides the pcre.backtrack_limit part,
 which did fix my problem.

 Yeah but increasing the backtrack limit is not an actual fix, just a
 workaround.  This ticket has twisted on for a while now but I reckon there
 is stuff in here that could probably fix it.
