Comment(by washer):
I am currently investigating this problem as well. I have a servint VPS
with 30 wp blogs, and excessive cpu usage problems. There are at least 100
mentions of this dating back to around version 2.5.
It appears the spikes take place for extended periods during the running
of cron. At this point in my search for answers, it appears it is the ping
list causing the extended spikes (ping list too large, sites down, etc)
and may be the problem.
I have replaced the default pingomatic and removed the customized ping
list and the server has since quited down. I am still watching this, and
was hoping to see if others have looked at this as well.
