 That is pretty nasty, I'll admit.

 I am curious if we avoided the register_shutdown_function() call to
 trigger `__destruct` manually, that this wouldn't occur. (Note, this is
 there for a reason despite it looking ridiculous, thanks to some PHP
 issues with certain versions.)
