 could get confused with something to do with Content-Type though.

 My personal preference is consistency. It's hard to kept mentally between
 things like "featured-image" and "thumbnail" and just causes confusion for
 a lot of developers (me included.)

 If you put it there querying on it will be needed.   Maybe a form of
 #14513 would help?
