Comment(by ploobers):

 WordPress does process this improperly when you move a hierarchical
 taxonomy term to another parent. If you move a term like 2010-10 under
 that a parent term that also had another item like 2010-12, then WordPress
 automatically renames the slug to '2010-parent-category'.
