 Frumph thanks for the replies.  I just tested it and it all works now,
 which may mean the system that generates the redirect URL that is
 compatible with IE is not being triggered during the course of conversion
 to multi-site.
 Continued regular use of the site over several hours, somehow triggered
 the recreation of the URLs.
