 We could continue to use, but deprecate, the old API.  The JSON-style
 requests are easy enough to distinguish from the old-style ones, and so
 the responses can be easily differentiated.

 The reason I chose milestone 3.1 is that with all the Ajax stuff coming in
 from your GSoC project (and others?) it's a good time to standardize.
