 Another big +1. I'm really surprised that this hasn't been implemented on
 the outset. The custom post type system feels incomplete without an
 archive/index page similar to category-slug.php:

 Was pulling my hair out over this!. Now using this plugin:
 http://www.cmurrayconsulting.com/software/wordpress-custom-post-type-
 archives/
 but it feels hackish and doesn't fully work as expected (custom menu
 support etc, see comments)

 Nacin, arguing against an index page feels like arguing against library
 catalogs.
