 I'm for the thickbox search, here's just an idea:

  1. Open thickbox with a small search form at the top,
  1. List of the top 20 or so items in a table right under the search,
  1. Include paging navigation with ajax to pull in next page (for those
 that like browsing, rather than searching),
  1. Allow user to select one or more items and click to add.

 Perhaps some screen shots would help me.
