 Ok I've modified my original version so paging works...(see attached)
 please let me know if anybody runs into other issues. my site isn't using
 custom fields for get posts. and definitely isn't using the below issue

  there's another potential issue, I think... if a plugin adds a having
 clause on
  posts_request that uses calculated fields rather than raw field names,
 then this
  optimization may very well end up breaking the query.
