Comment:

 big -1 on exclude. it's far too messy. (suppose I want to insert *two*
 galleries in my post.)

 better proceed as is done in thickbox galleries: data with the same rel
 tag in their link are in the same gallery. adding a dropdown in the insert
 gallery page would then do the trick.
