parent. it seems to imply that private pages should always get listed,
regardless of whether the user can view them or not.

Public pages used to inherit their parents' privacy until 2.5 beta 1. This
 changed in 2.5RC1. When I [http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/6277
reported the change], I got a wontfix, with the developers saying:

Inheriting the "private" status can be tricky and misleading"

But regardless of the inheritance issues, we really do need to be able to
set pages as children of hidden/future posts.

I suggest that when a parent is hidden, the dropdown on the child is pre-
selected to "private", and you are not allowed to change it to "publish".

Likewise with future pages, the child page should 'inherit' the publish
time of it's parent, and you should be allowed to set the time later, but
 not earlier than the parent.

Stopping the user doing what is illogical seems to be the only way forward
 here.
