Comment:

 Yes, If you install the PHP SSH2 extension, It can upgrade via SFTP.

 I'm closing this as worksforme, As if you've got the required modules
 installed, It works.

 There are some known issues, eg: #8120

 This isn't a support forum however, So if you have any problems with the
 basic instructions in the file, you'll have to seek support for it
 elsewhere (Preferably PHP support forums possibly, I'm not sure how much
 luck you'll have with the WordPress support forums - although there might
 be a few there who can help)
