 Further info:

 So I gave up on the 2.8.1 install, and decided to try 2.7.1.

 Same thing happened.  The target install directory was
 http://stevenmbooth.com/wordpress.  I did a completely normal install
 operation by browsing to stevenmbooth.com/wordpress/wp-admin.

 The install process put 'http://www.stevenmbooth.com?step=2' in the
 wp_options table, and now I'm getting a 501 error when I try to log-in.
 <sigh>.
