 @westi -- I'm pretty certain you'll wonder about this:

 front-page.php -> page template -> page.php

 rather than:

 page template -> front-page.php -> page.php

 the reasoning is, if a user specifies a page template (e.g. a sales letter
 template), he means it and wants that on the front page.
