 actually, there's a bit more difference.

 Aaron's does:

  - static front: page template -> front-page.php -> page.php -> index.php
  - blog: home.php -> index.php

 Mine does:

  - static front: page template -> front-page.php -> page.php -> index.php
  - blog front: front-page.php -> home.php -> index.php
  - blog: home.php -> index.php
