 They were (are?) stored in the DB at least.

 AFAIK they were also applied automatically, but I don't know why (I only
 had 1 blog that time, maybe it was a plug-in?) ... however it should be
 possible to reuse them. Let's say with a checkbox "enable automatic
 updating" or sth...
