 Just to put this out there, the existing *_post_type functions are:

  * get_post_type
  * get_post_types
  * register_post_type
  * set_post_type

 I'm all for parting from the post_type name, because people have a hard
 time seeing that as anything other than types of '''posts'''.  They'd see
 that as an article vs a tip vs a review, but not as an attachment or a
 podcast or even a page.  As for what else you choose, I think object_type
 is good, but if it's too "programmer friendly" and not user friendly, then
 I'm fine with item_type as suggested above.
