Comment:

 I'm closing as wontfix and leaving it for plugin territory.

 As of WordPress 2.9+, If you have the WP.com stats plugin installed, You
 get a shortlink added automatically based off the wp.me system.

 Core shouldnt prefer any specific shortening service over one another..
 just look at the twitter & bit.ly combination..

 Users have the option to use a Plugin to get the wp.me domain shortlinks
 if they wish, and theres nothing stopping a plugin from using bit.ly or
 tiny.cc etc.
