 if the issue truly is about emails, how about this approach?

 a) if it doesn't look like a singular, then bail

 b) if it's a singular page, then check the length of the url. if it's not
 70-80 chars long then it was probably wasn't cut in an email, so bail.

 c) we're sure we've a singular whose url was cut. we try to find the
 correct one using chosen bits from our current algorithm
