 Thing is, the point of this is to speed things up. Adding another plugin
 goes against that concept, really, even if it only has a very small effect

 Maybe, but it doesn't without modules installed which not all hosts have
 enabled. And most/many other equivalent projects to WP have this option.

 That's a good concept, but still doesn't help in the case where
 mod_deflate isn't available.
