 This patch has been lingering since WP 2.3.

 Is Automattic even considering this change to the update API?  Is the
 patch worth updating or will it simply be ignored for another year?

 Please take a look at this -- I'm not the only one who thinks this is a
 slap in the face to plugin authors.
