 Sorry, I was not detailed enough:

 In the “could not copy file” instance, the plugin updated fine the 2nd
 time I tried.

 In the instance where I got the dialog to download update.php, the update
 had been successful, as it turned out.

 So, in the end, all 3 plugins were updated successfully.

 I’ll install the logging plugin, and attach the logs here if there are any
 more problems.
