 Because the vast majority of users don't care what the ID of their post is
 (they're for internal usage only or for those who want to edit their
 theme). It takes up screen real estate (which is lacking on low resolution
 monitors) and will just confuse the novice user.

 It takes literally 1-2 seconds to enable it.

 The better question is: Why should it be ''on'' by default?
