Comment:

 The correct solution to your problem is to use new rewrite rules.

 I am well aware that adding rules to WP is a black art and it is an area
 that needs improvement.

 Before working on it we need to prototype how its going to work and ensure
 that the api's we added a few versions back in an attempt to make it
 simpler will still work.
