Comment:

 I agree that it is a bizarre idea, but one that Gallery2 supports. I
 believe it is completely possible to do this for !WordPress 2.8, in that
 instead of accessing wordpress.org, you are accessing another domain for
 the zip.

 As long as the user has to initiate the request, then I don't see anything
 wrong with it. It will go a long way with cutting out having to first
 download and then upload, when you can just tell WordPress to download and
 then unzip and install for you.
