 The Ajax loading of the news is obviously going to fail if it cant connect
 to the remote server (Sounds like your host has set it up so that external
 access is not allowed), But slow loading isnt right.

 Are other pages still slow (ie. which dont have RSS feeds loading on them
 - New posts page is good) with cron short-circuited?
