Comment:

 Could you possibly provide a bit more information (examples) on both
 issues?

 As for the URI, I think the space needs to be encoded before anyways, as
 the $default is the real image source if the email-field is empty.

 Maybe your rating setting blocks the avatar from being displayed? What
 does the final link look like?
