 I'm fine with either approach as long as it does its best to work with
 whatever transports are available.  I want this to work out of the box for
 as many people as possible.  The OOP patches seem to do that so that's a
 point in their favor as far as I'm concerned.

 If we can pick an approach, we might be able to put this in 2.6 and use it
 in one or two lower-impact spots in the core code to try it out.  We can
 migrate everything over in 2.7.
