 The "Crop thumbnail to exact dimensions" option under Settings ->
 Miscellaneous needs to be off by default. It even says, "normally
 thumbnails are proportional," but it's on anyway, and as a result photos
 are distorted. Freshly upgraded users are baffled until they go hunting in
 the settings.
