 Result:

 New http.php with your patch - WP 2.7 with plugins - loading time first
 page: Core files 1.6 - but then it takes long to load other elements eg.
 pictures, external links - in total 12 seconds.

 WP 2.7 new installation, without any plugins, default theme - loading time
 first page: 1.6s

 BTW. With this patch the other problem went away - I can update plugins
 now automatically - before this ended with an error message.
