 the current implementation theoretically allows to do something like this:

 1st post: (3- column gallery)

 [gallery]

 2nd post:

 [gallery columns="2"]

 trouble is, both galleries will end up with 2 columns in this case... so
 it's misleading.

 also, it would be nice to be able to define the default number of columns
 without needing to edit the shortcode of each post. an option under
 Settings / Miscellaneous would be nice.
