 How about this for a UI idea? (See attached PNG file)

 It would pretty much follow the Template Hierarchy. The "Default" would be
 the home page. When you clicked any of the extra tabs to edit that page,
 you'd get an exact copy of the default if no custom setting for that type
 of page already exists, or the custom sidebar for that type of page if it
 does exist. All the pages other than the default would have a button to
 "remove customizations" for that sidebar page, in order to fall back to
 the default or archive or whatever applies.

 Seems like the simplest way to do it to me.
