Comment:

 Based on technosailor's feedback, marking WONTFIX for now.

 Znuff, possibly create a new ticket just for the gzip part .

 WORKAROUND

 Consider the functionality of the wp-db-backup plugin . Though not
 equivalent, it may meet your needs.
