Comment (by intoxination):

 Perhaps the best solution would be to change it to a password field. Once
 that is submitted, a test connection is made. If it succeeds, the
 installation proceeds. If it fails then it returns to the previous form
 alerting the end user of the error (numerous other systems utilize
 something very similar).
