 "What if you want to add a new column relevant to only tags in the
 future?"

 Instead of "what ifs" what would be helpful to the discussion is "this is
 a specific thing that won't work if tags and categories are in the same
 table."

 Reusing tables has worked out well for us in the past, for example we
 don't have separate tables for posts and pages and attachments, etc. It
 actually allows us a lot more flexibility, and prevents table bloat.
 (Remember installing PHP Nuke and getting 40-someodd tables?)
