 I stumbled over this behavior in both WP 2.2.2. and in 2.3-alpha (trunk):

 When adding custom fields (in my case to store translated versions) to a
 page i can add them just fine. I only hit "add custom field" and they show
 up and get stored to the DB. When editing the pages content and saving the
 page the meta keys and values are gone.
