 We do display an author dropdown on the edit post /edit page pages.

 Would this patch be more acceptable if I reduced it to one query with a
 JOIN to wp_users to get the nicename rather than using get_userdata?

 Otherwise could we just add an add_action here so that it's really simple
 for plugins to extend the available filtering?
