WordPress would not be where it is without plugins.
I have used WP since 2004, since my-hacks.php
Right now:
"Extend your WordPress experience! Browse 59,657 free plugins."
Assume that each plugin developer made 10 plugins, that means that Matt is
denying data to almost 6000 developers.
SIX THOUSAND actual people.
Yes that assumption is daft, there are way more developers.
Yet I see no noise though. Nothing on HN, Ars, The Verge, Wired, The
Register, Slashdot, Reddit, Facebook etc.
I have no horse in this race apart from the fact that I honestly believe
that the witholding of data - data which is being used to enrich
Automattic - is wrong.
It really is fundamentally wrong.
As a plugin dev data doesn't just help lead development, it also gives you
that feeling that "Yeah!" as you knew you were filling a need.
I wonder what worries plugin devs about speaking out?
What power stops you?
This is not a crit, it's an honest question.
Don't answer me here, or anywhere, but something surely has to happen to
at least try and stop this guy from effectively exploiting you.
Plugin devs didn't just help get WP to where it is, it also helped get
Matt to his multimillionaire guru cool status.
He owes you more, far far more.
