I think it's a good idea. The immediacy of Playground is ideal for
discovering content from the repository.
Sorry if this is directly related but I recently created a plugin that
also allows you to do that from within your WordPress installation, among
other things.
From within your WordPress you access the plugins or themes directory and
a "Playground" button appears to test that theme or plugin without having
to use your local installation.
As you don't have access to the plugins and themes directory you won't be
able to test the buttons, but you can see it here:
https://playground.wordpress.net/?plugin=toys-for-playground&url=/wp-
admin/admin.php?page=toys-playground&mode=seamless (I love how fast it is
to get here with Playground).
Plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/toys-for-playground/

admin/plugins.php?)
I think for plugins it would be interesting to take them directly to the
plugin configuration page. As I did in the link above. If the
configuration page doesn't exist, you could send them to /wp-
admin/plugins.php
In the plugin I send the user to the wp-admin for plugins and to the front
end for themes.

with the default?
The default ensures better performance (newer versions of PHP and WP).
Should it be available on all plugins, or selectively (eg only those
actively maintained, or supporting a recent WP version?)
