Comment (by joyously):

 It seems biased to block themes. My 4 year old theme has style variations
 built-in, but it can't participate even though the Customizer could do
 this way back then.
 I think the Theme Previewer would benefit from showing the Customizer, so
 the user could really see the theme options for the majority of themes.
