It is time to join the damn dots.

 Read this:
 https://make.wordpress.org/core/2022/09/11/canonical-plugins-revisited/

 Now read this:
 https://wptavern.com/wordpress-org-removes-active-install-growth-data-for-
 plugins

Who has access to ALL THE DATA?
 Matt.
The guy who runs wp.org and wp.com and Automattic

The guy who can say "Hey, that plugin is getting traction, put it in
 Jetpack."

Oh yes, Jetpack..... the plugin that tells Automattic everything about
 plugins and themes.
Not in the wp.org repo? Doesn't matter, Jetpack will report on installs,
activations, deactivations. That's the same Jetpack which has shadow
profiles for websites it is installed on. That's the same Jetpack led by
a8c employee GeorgeS who commented above about some spurious 'security'
concern. That's the same Jetpack which if your wp install is in
/public_html will crawl and report on EVERYTHING in public_html

wordpress.org used to have an 'extend' menu that covered plugins and
 themes
'embrace' has got wordpress to where it is
Now Matt wants to use that last E and you all know what that stands for.
