Comment (by zebulan):

Regardless of intention, it sure looks bad when a feature deemed so useful
by plugin devs is removed without prior notice, and without any solid
reasoning given even after much probing.

And yet it's the plugin devs who are expected to give answers? WP made the
first move; the burden of proof should be on WP, not the plugin devs.

And then there's bizarre statements like this:

 >Even if 10,000 people commented and appeared to agree that would still be
a small fraction of the wider WP community. That’s one of the hardest
things to navigate in open source, and product and community development
 generally.

This implies that there's a significant number of people who would prefer
that the stats be removed. But if that were true, where are they and what
are their arguments? Again, the burden of proof is on WP, not the plugin
 devs.

Let's say WP decides one day to remove its built-in comments
functionality. You could post the same tweet and it would be just as
"appropriate". So what if 10,000 people want to keep the comments feature?
We don't know what the wider WP community thinks, so I guess it's okay to
remove it without prior notice and without explanation! Gee, open source
sure is hard to navigate, isn't it?

I don't want to believe that WP is doing this for reasons of greed, pride,
or some other sin. But it's hard to blame anyone for making such an
assumption when all that has been provided thus far are unannounced
decisions, poor arguments, and unfair deflections of responsibility onto
 the plugin devs.

From top to bottom, this change has been handled poorly, to put it nicely.
